WHEN trouble arises, online activism is often a route to safety. Its is increasingly spearheadedby organizations like International PEN, the Committee to Protect Journalists, Amnesty and Reporters without Borders. But working behind the scenes the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) with its system of alerts, brings international attention to the writers who are imprisoned, attacked, or facing execution in dictatorships around the globe. IFEX helps these groups both stay in close contact with activists and dissidents in far-flung countries and and orchestrate massive e-mail campaigns within hours of learning of new cases of repression.
IFEX monitors, promotes and defends freedom of expression worldwide. IFEX was born in 1992 in Montréal, Canada. It has over 80 member organisations operating in more than 50 countries, the majority in the developing world and countries in transition. Website: ifex.org
