Tanzania bares its fangs, closes two papers

Tanzania, often hailed as an oasis of peace and democratic governance in volatile Africa, has come under fire over its closure of two popular newspapers for allegedly violating "journalism ethics and the law". Tanzania's Minister of Information, Culture and Sports, George Mkuchika, announced the forced closure of the two newspapers, Leo Tena and Kulikoni, after they "violated" journalism ethics as defined by his government. The Media Institute of Southern Africa has strongly condemned the closure of the two titles as unconstitutional as it violated the right to freedom of expression and, by extension, press freedom.
